Martin R. Infante
President & Founder

SELF was founded by Martin R. Infante, a former drug dependent who rose from the ashes of his own addiction. Martin spent 20 years abusing substances before undergoing treatment in a TC. When he learned that his house of recovery was closing down, he decided to start his own treatment facility in 1992 and called it SELF, a fitting acronym for what had become his greatest discovery—learning about the self.

Since establishing SELF, Martin has devoted his entire life to the development of the TC in the Philippines and Asia. In 1998, he served as the Chairman of the Inter-Agency Committee for the Treatment and Rehabilitation of Substance Dependents (IAC-TRDD) of the Dangerous Drugs Board (DDB) in the Philippines.

In 2002, Martin was elected to the Board of the Asian Federation of Therapeutic Communities (AFTC) and re-elected in 2005 and again in 2008. During his long stint with the AFTC, he was instrumental in the propagation and development of best TC practices in the Asian Region.

In June 2003, Martin was appointed as the Vice-Chairman of the Standards & Goals Committee of the Executive Council of the World Federation of Therapeutic Communities (WFTC) by its then President, the late Monsignor William O’ Brien.

Martin has also served the Colombo Plan Drug Advisory Program as a resource person and has co-authored several handbooks:

  1. Development of Family and Peer Support Groups (November 2003)
  2. Management of Drug Treatment Programs in Asia (May 2005)
  3. Client and Family Education (August 2009)

In 2009, having achieved his goal of establishing SELF as a world-class treatment center, Martin turned his attention to sharing the Foundation’s best practices with other TCs. This led to the development of two training modules: The TC Basic Management Course and TC Management Advancement Course.

In 2012, Martin became a member of the WFTC Board. Eventually, his training initiatives were recognized by the WFTC as it certified SELF as a TC Learning Institute in 2013.

In 2014, he was appointed as the Communications Committee Chairman where he sits as the Editor-in-Chief of the WFTC Newsletter.

Martin is now working to establish SELF as the TC Training Hub of Asia.
