What began as an intramural sports competition to celebrate the SELF’s 13th founding anniversary turned into an Olympic-like event involving the entire SELF community over a period of two months. In September 2005 Taal View House held its first Soberlympics™ event. The SELF Family was divided into four color teams that would compete with each other in six games: badminton, basketball, chess, scrabble, table tennis and volleyball. Elimination rounds were scheduled every week and, on the day of the SELF Anniversary, the championship matches were played.

Much like the Olympics, the occasion started with a motorcade and parade of colors. The four color teams marched down to the quadrangle in their uniforms each with their own muse. After an opening ceremony that featured the lighting of “the torch of sobriety”, the games were declared open. The cheering competition kicked off the festivities followed by the championship games. The celebration ended in the evening with a fellowship dinner where trophies were awarded to the winners of each game. Since the inaugural event, seven more Soberlympics™ events have been held.
