Background

In the early 90s, drug rehabilitation was still a developing industry in Asia. There were only a handful of centers operating then and the Therapeutic Community (TC) was not a well known approach. Luckily, numerous training opportunities were made available by DAYTOP International in that decade.

Through numerous conferences and workshops, TC practitioners became more attuned to its principles and soon, the TC became the treatment modality of choice for many rehab operators throughout Asia. Among the achievements of that decade were the development of the concept of Aftercare and the Family Program—which eventually opened doors to a wider understanding of co-dependency.

At the turn of the Millennium, however, training about the TC became scarce as the focus shifted towards generic methods of intervention. There was also a growing demand to train practitioners in the multi-discipline fields (counseling, family therapy etc.). Not only were TC seminars shelved, but the approach in itself took a beating and was criticized for being brutal and inhumane. This smear campaign carried on for most of the decade and folks like us in the SELF TC were left to fend for ourselves.

SELF TC Model

Since 1992, SELF has had a widespread experience in running the TC. We survived numerous crisis situations and have emerged more knowledgeable and wise about the ways to effectively implement the TC. We embraced the “learnings” and have humbly been in constant review of our methods and practices, improving them as we went along. The wisdom has led us to develop an approach that was respectful, logical and practical. We believed that we could train residents to grow beyond the limits of recovery and champion their sobriety.

Today, we feel that we have reached the apex of our program’s development and wish to share our success by offering a Training Course on the implementation of our Dual Approach TC Program at reasonable cost.
