About

SELF was founded by Martin R. Infante, a former drug user who rose from the ashes of his own addiction. Martin spent 20 years abusing substances before undergoing treatment in a TC. Learning that his house of recovery was closing down, he decided to start his own treatment facility and called it SELF, a fitting acronym for what had become his greatest discovery—learning about the self.

In 2002, Martin was elected to the Board of the Asian Federation of Therapeutic Communities (AFTC) and re-elected in 2005 and again in 2008 where he now serves as its Treasurer. During his long stint with the AFTC, he has been instrumental in the propagation and development of best TC practices in the Asian Region.

In June 2003, Martin was appointed as the Vice-Chairman of the Standards & Goals Committee of the Executive Council of the World Federation of Therapeutic Communities (WFTC) by none other than its president, Monsignor William O’ Brien.

Today, apart from directing the operations of SELF, Martin serves as a regional trainor with the Colombo Plan Drug Advisory Program (CPDAP). He co-authored the following handbooks published by the CPDAP:
1. Development of Family and Peer Support Groups

(November 2003)

2. Management of Drug Treatment Programs in Asia

(May 2005)

3. Client and Family Education (August 2009)

To this day, Martin has been relentless in developing the SELF TC program. He has grown into an avid trainer and loves to teach about the TC approach. His dream is to be able to set up a training center where he could formally share all his experiences to local and international colleagues.
