As part of its training initiative, SELF is prepared to send a training team to your center to conduct a basic audit of physical plant set ups, program structures, systems and procedures with the aim of suggesting improvements. Through Seminars, Workshops Round Table Discussions and Coaching Sessions, the training team can help the management determine ways to improve program efficacy and staff commitment.

The Comprehensive Training Program at the DOH Malinao TRC

lyn, ando MayonIn August 2013, SELF sent a team of trainers composed of its President and Founder Martin Infante, Deputy Director Lyn Simbulan and Senior Counselor Fernando David to the Bicol region to conduct comprehensive training on the TC program of the Department of Health (DOH) Malinao Treatment and Rehabilitation Center (TRC) in Albay. This was achieved on the invitation of their center director, Dr. Teresa Iñigo who prepared a conference themed: Enhancing our TC. Upon arrival, a site visit and facility tour was conducted where the team was able to inspect the present set up and meet with the staff to discuss the consultancy and development plan.

seminar     On August 15 Martin started lectures on the TC Approach at the Casablanca Suites hotel in Legaspi City. He tackled the Principles and Philosophies, Rules and Structures, and Program Phases of the TC Approach. Then he explained the concept of “Community as the Method” and under­scored the importance of a TC program that is peer driven rather than staff driven. Speaking from his own experience, both as a recovering addict and rehab operator of more than 20 years, Martin shared the valuable insights he gained from the missteps he made in the early days of running a TC, and how these led to the development of the SELF program.

RTD     Martin emphasized the need to establish a Strict yet Caring culture in the program and underscored the importance of the staff leading as Role Models to the residents. During the breaks, videos about the SELF program were also shared. Private consultations with the center director were also held that led to a fruitful encounter between management and the key staff of their operation. This resulted in a marked improvement in relationships which fostered unity, setting the stage for future developments to come.

martin presents manual 1    On August 16, SELF Deputy Director Lyn Simbulan and Senior Counselor Fernando David conducted another series of lectures on Special Populations, Work Ethics and Stress Prevention. The rest of the day was spent in Round Table Discussions with the staff. During the closing ceremonies, the Malinao TRC management and staff expressed their satisfaction with the training. In a gesture of good faith, Martin handed over a copy of the SELF Manual of Operations to Dr. Tess Iñigo and committed to come back with even greater support.

Encouraging Progress

     In March 2014, SELF sent another delegation composed of Martin Infante, Program Director Lea Tumbado and Facility Manager Danilo Noche to the Malinao TRC. This time, the objectives were to help establish the Treatment Phases and a more proactive staff culture. As they arrived in the Malinao TRC, the trainers were pleased to see that the initial developments they proposed had been adopted, particularly the establishment of an Induction Phase prior to treatment. The next two days were spent at the Venezia Hotel where the training team conducted seminars and workshops. These were highlighted by a variety of therapy and encounter sessions to build a more responsive TC culture amongst the staff.

    To date, the Malinao TRC continues to send their staff members to SELF for Study Tours to further their knowledge and skill.
